used to be

Outside your window, lightning
strikes the tree you would climb
as a child. Its gaudy boughs
Charred and delicate like the tip of a match
And you see it now, as it was before
the ties and the office buildings.

Used to be, we bathed in the sun
Used to be you played in the trees.

You remember the wet days
How you would collapse
like rain into its strong arms.
Sensibility, you called it. Spider-web limbs
defying gravity. You clung
to each other then.

Used to be, we cried in the rain
Used to be you played in the trees.

Outside your window, you stare
at the tree you loved
as a child. Vacated. Scarred.
You never meant to forget. Memories,
lost like tears in rain, if only you had stayed
a little longer.
